How BioWare will make The Old Republic awful

It's the little things that matter, isn't it?

Every great game maker has a pretty thorough mastery of the little things. Blizzard is great at the little things. Nintendo is great at the little things. Valve is great at the little things.

But BioWare just isn't in that same class, and it's really their indifference to the little things that make it so. I've written at length about their lack of checkpoints making me nuts. Let me complain about another little thing in Dragon Age that made me nuts.

So you start a new character in Dragon Age and they ask you to pick a character. This is fine, although they don't tell you that if you don't pick a healer you're at a disadvantage since you won't have one in the first chapter, but whatever. Then they ask you to spend your first skill points. You have never played the game before. You have no idea what you need in the game, you have no idea what is useful or what you find most fun. But you are supposed to choose where your skill points go.

Why have me spend skill points before I know what to do with them? Why give me skill points before I know what to do with them?

People tolerate this kind of stuff in Bioware's RPG's, because you can deal with this sort of stuff in a 20 or 40 hour game, and you can always throw your character away and start over again. But massive games are a whole different ballgame. People aren't going to want to deal with this. I'm angry just thinking about a MMOG designed like a Bioware RPG.

Personally I think talent trees just suck and pretty much every game that has them does the same thing. You're forced to make decisions based on what you know right at the start, that you may need to change later.

I think they should have provided some way to respec in Denerim -- but I can see why they might feel it's counter immersive.

Still, don't look for any radical new game mechanics in SWTOR, it just doesn't seem to be what they do.

YOU ARE A FUCKING ASSHOLE!!! Suck it up you pansy bitch. boo hoo i bought a game and didn't know shit about it and am mad because i'm an idiot that couldn't figure out what to do. you don't need a damn healer in the beginning if you are any good at games whatsoever. and the skill points at the beginning....it's pretty self explanatory what they all do so you not understanding is just pitiful. Grow a pair and stop bitching, i'd like to see you design a game. actually no i don't, your game would suck because you are a moron. Fuck you and get a life
